Youth perform Shakespeare

VCA ShakesKIDS, the youth production company founded for young students to perform Shakespeare’s canon before graduation from high school, will present the bard’s “The Winter’s Tale,” at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Kay White Hall.

Founded by director Aimée van Roekel, ShakesKIDS met once a week for a year-long exploration of the play. Van Roekel involved the cast — students ages 9 to 14 — in all aspects of the production, from choosing the time period in which the play is set to building sets and creating costumes. The young thespians also had the opportunity to develop their characters over time.

A second performance of “The Winter’s Tale” will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, June 24, at Vashon Community Care.

Tickets for both shows are by donation at the door.

Van Roekel will teach “Shakespeare Scenes Worth Fighting For!” a youth summer camp for ages 8 to 18, from August 14 to 17. See vashoncenterforthearts.org for more information.
