Chase away the blues

Mark Graham and Orville Johnson will be at Vashon Island Music Saturday, Sept. 6 for what store owner Karen Eliasen bills as “a cure for the end-of-summer blues.” Graham will teach a harmonica workshop from 10 a.m. to noon, and Johnson will follow with a slide guitar workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. At 7 p.m., both musicians will return for a private concert.

Workshops cost $25 each, and concert tickets are $15. Space is limited and registration is required. Call 463-0552 for more information.

Cinematic food for thought

Café Luna will present a three-month series of films exploring the topic of food.

The first film in the series, “Food Matters,” will be screened at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at the café. The screening is free, and a discussion led by series curator Peter Ray will follow.

“Food Matters” is a documentary directed by James Colquhoun and Laurentine ten Bosch. Ray said that a viewing of the film “might just change your life.”

Films slated for October and November are “The World According to Monsanto” and “Asparagus, Stalking the American Life.”

Laugh it up at the Bike

Comedians Brett Hamil and Daniel Carroll will perform stand-up at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, at Red Bicycle Bistro & Sushi. There is no cover charge.

Steffon Moody, who will host the comedy night, promised a night of “shameless hilarity.”

Daniel Carroll has appeared on stage with Robin Williams, Jim Gaffigan, Reggie Watts and many others.

Brett Hamil performs comedy in clubs throughout the Northwest. He hosts several monthly comedy showcases in Seattle, and he made his Bumbershoot debut this year.

Call for artists

King County 4Culture’s “Site Specific” program is looking for artists and organizations with ideas for site-specific performances and installations throughout suburban and rural King County communities.

Fiddlin’ ’Round on TV

Vashon’s all-girl band will make its television debut on “Big Night Out,” a variety show on Seattle Channel 21. The live performance will take place at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3 at Columbia City Theater, 4916 Rainier Ave.
