Benefit concert raises $5,000 for Puerto Rico

Hundreds of islanders gathered at the Vashon Theatre last Wednesday night for a benefit concert

Hundreds of islanders gathered at the Vashon Theatre last Wednesday night for a benefit concert to aid Puerto Rico that featured the Shook Twins and island musician Sarah Christine. According to organizer Debra Heesch, the show netted $5,000, all of which will be sent to the National Boricua Human Rights Network. The organization is made up of Puerto Ricans in the United States and their supporters and aims to mobilize the Latin American community on issues of justice, peace and human rights. Funds will be used to help those affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

It’s been more than two months since Maria, the last of the two Category 5 storms to hit the area, tore through Dominica and the U.S. province. As of last Wednesday, Puerto Ricans were still struggling with what is being called the largest power outage in the history of the United States. The Weather Channel reported on Tuesday, Nov. 14, that less than 50 percent of Puerto Rico had power. On Friday, the executive director of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority resigned, according to an article in The Washington Post.
