Wednesday market

The Vashon Farmers Market will be open in the Village Green from 2 to 6 p.m. today, July 30. The market is extending the Wednesday hours until 6 p.m. to accomodate commuters and people who work in Island businesses.

Farmers will bring a wide variety of fresh, Island-grown summer vegetables and some fruits.

There will be music on the Green between noon and 3 p.m. sponsored by Vashon Park District’s Tunes @ Noon.

Tall ships photos

The Heritage Museum will be open from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, featuring a display of tall ship photographs. These photos have been entered in the museum’s first photo contest featuring the tall ships in Quartermaster Harbor earlier this month.

Master gardeners

The master gardener clinic will meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, and Saturday, Aug. 2, outside of True Value. On Saturday between those same hours, master gardeners will also be at the Farmers Market.

They will be available to help answer gardening questions, including planting vegetable seeds now for fall.

Stop by for gardening advice, available resource materials, plant identification and more.

Flower Fair

The Vashon-Maury Island Garden Club will hold its annual Flower Fair from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, in the meeting room of the Vashon Library.

The club invites the community to join them in celebrating the color and abundance of summer gardens and to gather inspiration and ideas.

Specimens on display will include annuals, perennials, herbs, grasses, shrubs and vegetables from club members’ gardens. Most specimens will be identified with both common and botanical names.

There will also be examples of flower arranging.

Visitors are invited to vote for their favorites in each category.

Farmers Market

The Vashon Farmers Market will be open in the Village Green from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2.

Island farmers will bring Vashon-produced milk, cheese, meats, wine, berries, pesto and summer vegetables, including tomatoes and eggplants.

There will be additional fruit from Tiny’s Organic of Eastern Washington.

There will be many Island-made crafts as wells as services, such as knife-sharpening, hair cutting and intuitive readings.

Music will be provided by the Island Troubadors from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Stories, music

Storyteller Merna Ann Hecht and musician Carolyn Candy will present “Tales and Tunes for a Summer’s Morning” at Vashon Bookshop at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2. All ages are welcome.

‘Dig the Beach’

The Vashon Youth Council will host “Dig the Beach” from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at Point Robinson park.

Karlista Rickerson will conduct eco-beach walks throughout the afternoon; Captain Joe Wubbold will lead tours of the lighthouse; The Monkey Tree will provide food (paid for by donation), and there will be live music and games for kids and young-at-heart adults.

Library LateNight

LateNight @ the Library for kids in grades six through 12 will meet from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at the Vashon Library.

Get a henna tattoo or limber up with Dance Dance Revolution and Guitar Hero open play. Participate in the Vashon Library Cyber Cafe, surf the Web, or play a game.

There will be refreshments and door prizes. Security will be provided.

Free legal clinic

The King County Bar Association’s monthly free legal clinic will be held Thursday, Aug. 7 at the Vashon Senior Center.

Anyone with a legal question may sign up for a 30-minute appointment with a volunteer attorney.

Please call 267-7070 Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon to make an appointment, which are scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m.

‘Virginia V’ cruise

Tickets are available for the Sunday, Aug. 17, cruise aboard the steamer “Virginia V,” sponsored by the Vashon Maury Island Heritage Association.

The around-the-Islands cruise on a National Historic Landmark vessel will depart from Vashon’s north-end passenger ferry dock at 1 p.m. and return around 5:30 p.m.

Tickets are $60 for Heritage Association members and $75 for non-members.

To purchase tickets, stop by the Island Heritage Museum at 10105 S.W. Bank Rd. on Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are also available at Books by the Way or by contacting Barbara Steen at 463-9355 or Vashonsteen@aol.com.

Friday lunch

The Vashon Senior Center on Bank Road has changed to “lighter fare Fridays,” offering salad and a sandwich for $3.50, starting at 11:45 a.m. Lunches will be prepared by volunteer guest chefs JoAnn Nielsen and Ellen Trout through the end of August. Lighter fare Fridays are open to everyone in the community.
