Vashon Park District will present Tunes at Noon in the park from noon to 3 p.m. Farmers will sell Island-grown basil, garlic, sweet and hot peppers and more summer favorites. Go early for tomatoes. Some crafts will also available.

Farmers Market

The Vashon Farmers Market will be open in the Village Green from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16. The market welcomes Island singer/songwriter Laurie Lyons from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Farmers will be selling Island-grown basil, garlic, sweet and hot peppers, summer squash, salad greens, a wide variety of heirloom potatoes, cottage garden bouquets and more summer favorites. Stop by early for tomatoes. Some nursery plants and trees will also for sale.

Sol Source will be selling lunch specialties including Island-rasied lamb burgers, Big Island salads and Kobe beef burgers. Many crafts and services will be available including knife sharpening, massage, handmade shopping bags, brooms, pottery, jewelry, soap and garden furniture made of reused wood.

Adopt-a-cat day

Vashon Island Pet Protectors (VIPP) hosts an Adopt-A-Cat Day from 11:30 to 2:30 p.m. every Saturday at Pandora’s Box. Stop by or call VIPP at 389-1085.

Farm tour

Langley Fine Gardens will host a farm and garden tour 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday Aug. 17.

Islanders are invited to come see the plethora of organic crops and sustainable farming methods. All stages of production will be on display: fallow fields begining to be plowed incorporating organic compost for next spring planting, newly seeded winter crops and finished crop harvest. Drip irrigation techniques will also be on display. Most crops will be labeled with easy-to-read signs — apples to zucchini.

The farm stand will be stocked and open.

‘Virginia V’ cruise

A few tickets are still available for the cruise aboard the steamer “Virginia V,” sponsored by the Vashon Maury Island Heritage Association.

The around-the-Islands cruise on a National Historic Landmark vessel will depart from Vashon’s north-end passenger ferry dock. Boarding begins at 12:30 p.m. for the 1 p.m. departure Sunday, Aug. 17. The vessel will return around 5:30 p.m.

Tickets are $60 for Heritage Association members and $75 for non-members.

Cinema Society film

Vashon Cinema Society presents a movie viewing and discussion of “Nausicaa’ of the Valley of the Winds” from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, at Ober Park inside the Vashon Park District building. This anime film is a thrilling tale of a young woman re-establishing a balance between humanity and nature, organizers said.

Admission is free, and refreshments will be provided. This program is sponsored by Vashon Youth Council, Development of Island Teens and the Vashon Park District. For more information, call Vashon Youth Council at 463-7350.

Tomato Taste-Off

The Vashon Island Growers Association will present the Tomato Taste-Off at the Vashon Farmers Market at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23.

Vashon farmers and gardeners are invited to submit their own Island- grown tomatoes that morning at 10 a.m. to compete in four different categories: Best Slicer, Best Cherry, Best Heirloom and Weirdest. Judging will be done by market shoppers, and prizes will be awarded.

English Faire

The Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit will hold its annual English Faire from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7. The cost is $6.

This is a community-wide event and includes fish and chips or vegetarian sausage, a croquet tournament, Renaissance jugglers, Celtic music and dancers and special games for the children.
