Nursing moms meet

Pregnant women, nursing moms and friends are invited to La Leche League at 10:15 a.m. Monday, Sept. 1, at the Presbyterian Church. The meeting topic is “Overcoming Breastfeeding Difficulties.”

Seniors to go cruising

In response to requests for a “sun break” cruise in 2009, the Vashon Senior Center will offer another fundraising cruise this year — to the Caribbean. This cruise will depart from Ft. Lauderdale on Feb. 1, 2009, on a seven-day cruise to San Juan, Puerto Rico; St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; Tortola, British Virgin Islands and Nassau, in the Bahamas. The ship is the Costa Fortuna, one of many modern liners in the Costa fleet, offering comfort and convenience to passengers on itineraries around the world.

As with all other cruises sponsored by the senior center, this cruise combines a fabulous itinerary, a great travel value and the additional benefit of an opportunity to travel in comfort with people you know from the community.

The cruise, while sponsored by the senior center, is open to all, and choosing to go on this cruise enables you to contribute to the ongoing work of the senior center. Cruisers take advantage of the low group rates, but all group amenity points and other group benefits go to the operation of the senior center.

So mark your calendars for 7 p.m. Sept. 9, when an informational cruise night at the senior center on Bank Road will provide additional information about the cruise and give you a chance to ask any questions you may have about the cruise. Please note that we are still taking reservations for the Canada cruise in October of 2009, and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have about that cruise.

Play cribbage at Eagles

On the last Saturday of August, you can learn to play cribbage for free. Drop by the Eagles any time between 1 and 4 p.m. Experienced cribbage players will be present to help you understand the basics of cribbage. Kids are welcome, and there is no age limit, but it is recommended that kids be at least in fourth grade.

Seniors take a landfill trip

We can run, but we can’t hide, as the movie “Wall-E” showed us about the disposal of our old junk. There’s a better way than leaving Earth, though: the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill run by King County’s Solid Waste Division — 920 acres of innovative waste reduction and recycling services. If you’d like to check it out, the Vashon Senior Center on Bank Road has scheduled a trip there, departing the senior center at 8:40 a.m., returning at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10. The cost to senior center members is $11, nonmembers $13.

Adoptive

families gather

For many cultures, the harvest is a season to celebrate. It’s a perfect time for our Island’s adoptive families to join together, share a meal and share stories. We’ll celebrate Vashon’s harvest bounty, connect with old friends and welcome the new children and families to our community.

It will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, at the Vashon Cohousing Common House at 10421 S.W. Bank Road

Games will begin at 4 p.m. followed by dinner beginning around 5 p.m.

The Vashon Island Quilt Guild heard an interesting program on Aug. 19 when Liz Theaker, new director of the La Conner Quilt & Textile Museum was the guest speaker. Theaker reported on the museum’s permanent collections and showed some special items from it. Current and upcoming shows and exhibits were announcedm and many questions were answered.

Myrtle Walls, Margaret Bickel, Donna Lund and Mary Lou Hillendahl were the meeting hostesses, and Caroline Dyer was welcomed as a guest.

Lorraine Kimmel and Jo Ann Bardeen reported on the recent Quiltfest sponsored by the Association of Pacific Northwest Quilters in Seattle. Judy Dohm’s upcoming classes were announced. It was decided that the mystery quilts should be completed to show at the March 2009 along with the Challenge Table Runner project.

It was announced that Taproot Theater in the Greenwood area of Seattle will be staging the play “Gee’s Bend” in January. Nancy Johnson volunteered to look into group tickets when they become available in October. A guild field trip may be planned.

Show & Tell yielded the usual terrific variety of quilts and projects to admire.

The next meeting, which will be an auction of quilting related items, is 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the Presbyterian Church.
