Blood drive tomorrow

Blood drive tomorrow

Puget Sound Blood Center will host a blood drive from 1 to 7 p.m. tomorrow, Thursday, May 15, at the Vashon Lutheran Church, 18623 Vashon Hwy. S.W. The blood drive will be closed for a lunch break from 3:15 to 4 p.m.

Call the blood center for more information at 1-800-398-7888.

Kite day at Point Robinson

Kite Day at Point Robinson will be from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 24. There will hopefully be breeze and sun.

The Point Robinson Ship’s Store will be open for the sale of kites and other nautical items; tours of the lighthouse will go on all afternoon, and there will be live music. The event is free, “a gift from the Keepers of Point Robinson to the Island community,” said Capt. Joe Wubbold, president of the organization.

Donate items to VIPP’s Fur Ball

Vashon Island Pet Protectors is accepting donations for its annual Fur Ball fundraiser: artwork, gardening, wine, vacation getaways, baked goods and more. Sponsorships are also needed to cover the costs of tents, food, music and silent tables for the auction, which will be held Aug. 2.

Proceeds from the event account for more than half of VIPP’s yearly operating expenses. Contact Kate Dunagan at 567-5485 or kateric@hotmail.com for more information, or go to www.VIPP.org to donate online.

Community council meeting

The next Vashon-Maury Island Community Council meeting will have three motions to consider and two presentations: A school district representative will describe the facilities planning effort now underway, and Sharon Nelson will recap the recent legislative session. The meeting is at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 19, at Courthouse Square. Everyone is welcome.

Collect shellfish samples

The Puget Sound Restoration Fund, a nonprofit group, is looking for a volunteer to collect shellfish samples at two sites on Vashon. Samples are critical to updating recreational shellfish harvesting closures and openings.

Volunteers are trained; they collect samples twice a month. It takes 30 minutes to collect the samples — 20 manila clams — which volunteers then pack in ice and mail to the state Department of Health’s shellfish lab in Shoreline. Sampling sites are at Point Vashon and Tramp Harbor.

Contact Morgan Rohrbach at the restoration fund at 780-6947 to volunteer as a shellfish harvester. The nonprofit’s Web site is www.restorationfund.org.
