School board meets
The Vashon Island School District board of directors will meet at 7 p.m. tomorrow, Thursday, March 20, in Courthouse Square.
On the agenda will be the capital projects budget, whether to demolish the Vashon Elementary School gym or wait six more months to try to secure restoration funding and a discussion of the McMurray Exploratory Week.
From now on, all school board meetings will be held in Courthouse Square.
Church window repaired
The historical stained-glass window depicting Jesus as the Good Shepherd at the Presbyterian Church that was vandalized last June will be back up fully restored by this Sunday — in time for Easter.
Mitchell Contractors put together a restoration team that has spent the last several months tediously repairing the window. K.B. Jones, a stained glass artist on Vashon, pieced the window together. Ed Lebel of Lebel Glass Studio in Seattle provided glass and did the paint restoration, Jones said.
The restoration took a few hundred hours, Jones estimated.
Transportation official visits
Paula Hammond, head of the state Department of Transportation, will speak at a special Vashon-Maury Island Community Council meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 20.
David Moseley, the new head of Washington State Ferries who reports to Hammond, will be unable to attend, as had been previously planned.
The meeting will be in the Chautauqua Elementary School multipurpose room.
Donate items to PTSA auction
The Vashon PTSA auction is seeking donations — items or cash — to help it raise a record amount of money for the school district. Anne Atwell, one of the organizers, said the PTSA welcomes a wide array of donated items, including tickets to a performance, fresh-baked cookies or a few hours of weeding.
Since 2002, the PTSA auction has netted more than $300,000 for new math, science and literacy books and enhanced arts programs. It’s also funding muchneeded professional development for science teachers.
To donate an item, fill out a procurement form, available at all three public schools or online at http://vashonptsaauction.org.
For more information, call Lee Ockinga at 370-0709 or e-mail lee@vashonisland.net. The procurement deadline is April 1.
