School board to meet

The Vashon Island School District board of directors will meet this Thursday, Dec. 13, at 7 p.m. in the Vashon Island High School library.

During the meeting, Vashon High School principal Susan Hanson and former board member Gene Lipitz will present the recommendations of the budget oversight committee.

The board will also discuss possible grade reconfiguration and will vote on two items — a technology plan and the transfer of nearly $330,000 from the district’s general fund to pay off part of a bond borrowed to remediate the Chautauqua Elementary School mold problem.

Tour K2, attend council meeting

The K2 Building will be open to Islanders at 6 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 17, when Richard Sontgerath and Truman O’Brien will present their plan to transform the sprawling site into a complex for nonprofits, small businesses and a recreational facility.

The Vashon-Maury Island Community Council general meeting will take place following the tour, at 7:30 p.m. In addition to getting a chance to find out more about K2 Commons, the VMICC membership will be asked to consider a number of motions, two pertaining to the Island’s ferry service and others authorizing spending that must be completed before the end of the year.

Access to the building and parking will be on the west side.

Santa to spread the wealth

Santa will visit the Senior Center on Bank Road to pass out a free toy to children from babyhood to age 10 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14.

Santa’s helpers reported the toys are top quality from the national Toys for Tots elves and will be gender-appropriate. Senior Center program chairman Carol Slaughter will assist Santa.

Ferry panel seeks members

The Vashon Island Ferry Advisory Committee, the primary liaison between Washington State Ferries and the community, is looking for additional Islanders to join it. Those interested should call Alan Mendel, the group’s chair, at 463-1453.

Laughing class lifts spirits

For those in need of a lighter spirit in the holiday season, a laughing class will meet from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at Island Yoga Center. The class, led by Weslie Rodgers, a certified laughter leader, is free, and all are welcome.
