Sail on, Virgina V

The Vashon Heritage Museum will celebrate the 100th birthday of the historic steamer Virginia V this month with events including a four-hour circumnavigation cruise of Vashon and an hour-long kid’s cruise around Blake Island.

The cruises will both take place on Saturday, Aug. 20, with the kids’ tour to Blake Island having a check-in time of 10:30 a.m, at the North End Passenger Ferry Dock. The circumnavigation cruise will depart at 12:30 p.m., from the same point.

The museum will also open a mini-exhibit, “Virginia V: 100 Years in Service,” on Aug. 5, which will run through October. And the museum’s August “Museum Talk” will feature Edward Brown, head docent for The Steamer Virginia V Foundation, in a presentation titled “History of the Virginia V: Still Steaming After 100 Years.” The free talk will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, both at the Land Trust Building and online, via Zoom.

Presbyterian yard sale

Vashon’s Presbyterian Church will hold a yard sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, including kitchen, household, books, toys, holiday, craft, garden, tools, and furniture items. Proceeds will go to Vashon Youth & Family Services and Vashon’s DOVE Project.

Recycle styro, plastics and volunteer to help

Bring styrofoam and plastic waste to the next First Sunday Styrofoam and Plastics Recycling Event, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, at the Sheffield Building, 18850 103rd Ave SW. Consider consolidating with neighbors to keep the line short. A downloadable list of “What We Accept” can be found at ZeroWasteVashon.org and the Facebook page for Vashon Styrofoam Recycling.
