“Since I Been Down” Screening and Panel

In collaboration with Backbone Meaningful Movies, Vashon-Maury Showing Up for Racial Justice will present “Since I Been Down,” a film and campaign built on transforming the vision of justice in the criminal legal system.

Join the panel discussion from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23, after viewing the film on your own. Panelists will include Director Gilda Sheppard, Associate Producer & Founder of Fabian’s Fund Lydia Barlow, Ginny Parham from Shoulder to Shoulder and Fabian’s Fund Program Manager Willie Nobles.

“A Time of Descent” — Jung Winter Online Weekend

Morning Prayers at Burton Church

All are invited to join a group of islanders now singing morning prayers in a Benedictine style, read from the Mundelein Psalter, which is also called the “Liturgy of the Hours.” Specifically, the morning prayer is called “Lauds.”

Prayers are sung from 6:30 to 7 a.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at the Burton Community Church.

The purpose of the practice, said organizers, is to “strengthen our bonds of unity by praying according to the time-tested technique of the Benedictines.

Registration Open for Spring Lacrosse

Vashon Youth Lacrosse team deadlines are approaching. Teams are open for boys and girls ages 7 to 18. Head to vashonlacrosse.net for more information and to register. Practices will begin in February. Lacrosse is a fast-paced Native American game with a rich history that has been played for around 1,000 years.

The Vashon AARP Taxaide will be assisting in preparing taxes at the Vashon Lutheran Church this year. To make an appointment, send an email with your name and phone number to vashonaarp@gmail.com.

Appointments are slated to begin on Feb. 3, but COVID-19 may cause the need to reschedule.
