• EVENTS •

Hydro race: Vashon’s annual hydroplane race commences at 5 a.m. Friday, July 4, at Jensen Point Park.

July 4 demonstration: Indivisible Vashon will host an Independence Day celebration and demonstration in Vashon town July 4. Participants will meet at Ober Park starting at noon, then march to town at approximately 1 p.m.

Fireworks: Consumer fireworks are banned in unincorporated King County, including Vashon, but fireworks company Pyro Spectaculars will once again bring a professional fireworks display to the center of Quartermaster Harbor this year, starting just after dusk (between 9:30 and 10 p.m.) on July 4. To report a lost or found pet that day, Islanders can call Vashon Island Pet Protectors at 206-389-1085. Haven, another animal welfare nonprofit, will also have a team of responders ready to search for, pick up and provide safe refuge for running or lost pets — contact them at 206-876-9652.

Story time: Visit the Vashon Library at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 5 for family story time — read, sing and learn all about strawberries.

Teen hangout: Drop by Vashon Library for snacks, arts and crafts, board games, roleplaying games and Nintendo Switch games — all free and sponsored by Vashon Friends of the Library — from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8 and each Tuesday through August 12. This is intended for ages in grades 6-12.

Burton speaker: Islander Terry Hershey will speak at Burton Community Church at 11 a.m. on Sunday, July 13. All are welcome to come hear his reflections and share in his humor and wisdom. The church is located at 23905 Vashon Highway.

Musical guest: Folk musician Hans Peterson will lead worship at 10:30 a.m. on July 13 at Vashon Lutheran Church. All are welcome.

Farmers Market: The Vashon Island Growers Association’s Farmers Market runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday at the Village Green through September 27. Visit vigavashon.org/market.

Free community dinners: Held Mondays through Fridays from 5-5:30 p.m. at the Vashon Presbyterian Church (17708 Vashon Highway SW) by the Interfaith Council to Prevent Homelessness.

• SENIOR CENTER •

Enjoy a hot lunch at noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and the following activities throughout the week at the Vashon Senior Center, 10004 SW Bank Road:

Frog Holler: At 1 p.m., Monday, July 7, come dance with the Frog Holler band, which will play traditional Appalachian music. Also, enjoy a dance and clogging demonstration.

Death Café: Meets 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. It is a discussion group rather than a grief support or counselling session, with an objective to increase awareness of death and help people make the most of their finite lives. Sequim trip: At 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 10, meet at the Senior Center for a trip to Sequim to enjoy the lavender fields. The group will stop for lunch. The cost for members is $50, and $65 for non-members. Members can sign up on Tuesday, July 1, and non-members can sign up after Monday, July 7. Call the Center at 206-463-5173.

Grief Ritual: Islanders are invited to share and witness each other’s grief on the first Sunday of each month from 1-2 p.m. Questions? Call Susan Pitiger at 206-818-4232, or Brad Davis at 206-799-7235. The next meeting is July 6.

Vashon Park District board: 6:15 p.m., Tuesday, July 8, at the Ober Park Administration Building, 17130 Vashon Hwy SW and via Zoom. The board meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. Visit vashonparks.org.

Water District 19 board: 6 p.m., Wednesday, July 9, at the district board room, 17630 100th Ave SW. The board meets the second Tuesday of the month, but this meeting was postponed by a day due to a board member’s prior commitment. Visit water19.com.

Vashon Cemetery District board: 1 p.m., Wednesday, July 9, at 19631 Singer Rd SW. The board meets the second Wednesday of the month. Visit vashoncemetery.org.

Vashon Island School District: 6 p.m., Thursday, July 10, at Chautauqua Elementary School, Room 302, 9309 SW Cemetery Road. The board meets the second and fourth Thursdays of the month. Visit vashonsd.org.
