Gatherings, talks, events and opportunities, coming up soon on Vashon

The Swift Water People

The Vashon Heritage Museum will host a sx̌ʷəbabš webinar, at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 11, with Brandon Reynon, the director of historic preservation for the Puyallup Tribe, who will talk about the sx̌ʷəbabš history, sovereignty and treaty rights.

Reynon will explain what treaties meant at their time in history and how they can be exercised today.

Celebrate six decades in teaching

All are invited to a party to celebrate Cornelius Lopez’s retirement from McMurray Middle School after 60 years in public education. The party, at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at Vashon Theatre’s outdoor plaza, will feature a concert by Cap’n Dick and The Portholes, as well as a cash bar, food, and refreshments. Support Lacrosse

Vashon’s high school boys lacrosse team, the Vultures, will battle for the state championship next weekend, at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, at the Vashon High School stadium. The club’s Mother’s Day bake sale and raffle, at Vashon Thriftway, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 14, at Vashon Thriftway, offers another chance to support lacrosse in a sweet way.

Joe Nguyen on Brown Briefly

According to a news release from Governor Inslee, Washington State is “building on landmark climate laws… that bring the state closer to meeting its energy needs and creating more jobs while stemming the tide of climate change.” Joe Nguyen, chair of the Senate Environment, Energy, and Technology Committee, is leading that effort. Join Truman O’Brien, Bruce Haulman, Craig Beles, and Kevin Jones on Voice of Vashon, 101.9FM, at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 16, to hear Sen. Nguyen.

Community Council Meeting

Vashon-Maury Island Community Council will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 18 at the Land Trust Building and on Zoom. Speakers will include John Taylor, of King County Local Services and Vashon’s Ferry Advisory Committee member Justin Hirsch. Find out more and get a link to join the Zoom meeting at v-mcc.org.

Buddhist-Christian Exchange

“Buddhist-Christian Contemplative Exchange: Embodied Practices for Everyday Mystics,” will be offered from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 20, at the Church of the Holy Spirit (Episcopal) sanctuary.

This free event will be a morning of stillness and inquiry into Zen Buddhist, Christian, and other practices, and include discussion facilitated by contemplative leaders, including Rev. Paul Rietmann, author and retreat leader. No registration is required, but for more information, call Shana Hirsch at 206-384-7350.

Trout Derby

The Vashon Sportsmen’s Club will host its annual Kids’ Trout Derby at 12 p.m. Sunday, May 21, at 19720 Singer Rd. SW.

Free and open to children 12 and younger, the Derby offers fun for the whole family. In addition to the fishing contest and the opportunity to win new fishing gear, club members will serve up hot dogs, chili, chili dogs, pop and water, all at reasonable prices.

Island singer/songwriter John van Amerongen will emcee and provide live music at the event.

Vashon rocks

”Antiques Rockshow: Uncovering and Understanding Vashon’s Rocks,” a program presented at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at the Vashon Library, will give islanders an opportunity to learn about Vashon’s rocks and bring their own prized rocks, for assessment, by a panel from the Vashon Union of Geologists, who will present the event. Registration is not required.
