Latino market ‘Como La Flor’

Comunidad Latina de Vashon’s Latino Market, “Como La Flor,” will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 21, in the Sheffield Building’s parking lot. At the event — the fourth market of its kind presented by the group — islanders can support local businesses and island youth vendors, enjoy Latin American foods, arts, music, and celebrate the brilliance of Vashon’s Latino community members. (See story, page 4.)

Grab your bike and ride

Calling all fans of two-wheeled transportation — a group of Vashon parents is organizing an all-ages and abilities bike ride starting at Ober Park and ending at Chautauqua Elementary School at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 21, rain or shine. The group, eager to add new members, will use this ride and other events to highlight the possibilities for sage routes for walking and rolling up and down the hilly landscapes of Vashon-Maury Island.

Agriculture Day at Mukai Farm & Garden

Stop by Mukai Farm & Garden from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 22 for the organization’s Agriculture Day. The day will include guest speakers at noon, an exhibit of old, local tractors on display on the Mukai grounds, and Marshall strawberry and Japanese vegetable starts for purchase.

‘Healing from Hate’

The Vashon Island Unitarian Fellowship and SURJ (Show Up for Racial Justice) will present the film “Healing from Hate,” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, at Vashon Theatre.

The doors open at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free. The movie is about a group of men who call themselves “Formers” — members of white supremacist, neo-Nazi, and alt-right groups who left the groups, even at risk to their personal safety, because they finally could no longer stand what they were seeing, hearing and experiencing both in private meetings of the groups and in public demonstrations.

Following the movie, a panel will discuss the film and its meaning and implications — and how hate can turn to healing.

“Let’s Talk about Living and Dying” group to meet

Return Home will offer an in-person presentation on terramation, also known as human composting, on Wednesday, June 8 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Island Funeral Home, in partnership with Island Funeral Service and “Let’s talk about Living and Dying”.

Return Home is a green funeral company offering an earth-friendly alternative to burial and cremation. The process used by Return Home gently transforms human remains into soil that can be used to grow new life and honor those who have died.
