Happenings | May 4 edition

Stop by the Farmers Market, help volunteer, attend a recycling event, and more.

Stop by the Farmers Market

The Vashon Farmers Market returns this weekend from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. beginning on Saturday, May 6 through Saturday, Sept. 30, in the Village Green. The market will be brimming with fruit, vegetables, flowers, three prepared food vendors, crafts, and live music every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Plant Sale

Six months of planning and propagation will culminate in the Vashon-Maury Island Garden Club’s annual plant sale, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, May 6, at Island Home Center & Lumber. This sale will offer a diverse variety of ornamental and edible plants that have been cultivated and donated by club members, as well as treasures offered in the event’s Shabby Chic Boutique. Money raised through the sale accounts for 70 percent of the club’s income and helps fund the club’s community work.

Recycling event

Bring your styrofoam and plastic waste to the next First (&Third) Sunday Styrofoam and Plastics Recycling Event, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, May 7, at the Sheffield Building, 18850 103rd Ave SW. Note: the event will no longer accept plastic waste if it is contained in a black plastic bag. Find a list of “What We Accept” and more info at zerowastevashon.org, or email nadine@nadineedelstein.com. To volunteer, contact jacquieperry@comcast.net.

Celebrate six decades in teaching

A party to celebrate Cornelius Lopez’s retirement and 60 years in public education is being funded by donations, and the Vashon community is invited to attend. Join the McMurray Middle School Staff at 3 p.m. on May 13 at the Vashon Theater’s outdoor plaza for a concert by Cap’n Dick and The Portholes, as well as a cash bar, food, and refreshments. To support the celebration, connect with Kelly Murphy, at kmurphy@vashonsd.org.

Got slopes?

Live near the water? Learn how to manage vegetation to stabilize slopes while maintaining a beautiful view of Puget Sound by attending King Conservation District’s free program, called “Where The Water Begins,” on May 19. Part course and part beach walk, “Where The Water Begins” was developed for property owners along the marine shorelines of King County. For more information, and to sign up for a spot in the class, visit online.

Help volunteer

The Vashon Land Trust is looking for volunteers to help at Matsuda Farm from 10 a.m. to noon, every Friday. Help is also needed on the stewardship crew, which gathers rain or shine weekly, from 10 a.m. to noon, every Tuesday. Sign up online.
