See your name on “Walk of Fame”

Step up to support Vashon Theatre’s plans to expand its operations and build a new outdoor plaza, complete with an outdoor screen, bistro tables, booths for merchants and an ADA-accessible restroom, by having your name engraved on the theater’s new “Walk of Fame.” Islanders have until Tuesday, May 17 to donate. Currently, islanders have donated $105,000 to the cause — only $35,000 remains to meet the goal by its deadline, May 17. Donate at tinyurl.com/2p958yua or tinyurl.com/4ma4dsfe.

Garden Club Plant Sale

The annual Vashon-Maury Island Garden Club Plant Sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m Saturday, May 7, at Island Home Center and Lumber. Shop early for the best selection as many offerings sell out quickly.

See local equestrians in action

The Shaggy Horse Show, a fundraiser for the Olympus Pony Club, will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at Paradise Ridge Horse Park.

Events include dressage, showmanship, jump classes, group classes and an award for the shaggiest horse. Concessions will be provided by Cub Scouts Pack 275. Safety is a priority— please keep young children close and bring only mellow, leashed dogs.

Sign up for woodworking classes

Vashon MakerSpace will offer an Introduction to Woodworking class, as well as an Intermediate Woodworking class. Participants in the introductory class will learn woodworking procedures, cost estimation, planing, jointing, ripping, crosscutting, and dado joint construction. Intermediate-level students will learn basic cabinet case and drawer construction techniques. Each class, $180, includes six sessions. Free dental day

On June 3, Dr. Marc Langland and his staff will volunteer to provide free dental care and cleanings for low-income people who do not have private dental insurance. To register, call Hilary Emmer at 206-463-7277 by May 6.

Spring Fix-It Café

The Vashon Fix-It Café returns from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at the Vashon Eagles. Advanced registration is required. Complete the form at www.vashonfixit.com to be paired with a fixer, or volunteer. In-person fixing is also available, with mask precautions and social distancing, likely in an outdoor setting.

Voice of Vashon series on Vietnam

On May 3, Steven Nourse, the host of the Voice of Vashon show “Isabled,” launched a second set of shows focused on the men and women who fought in the Vietnam War — “The war in Vietnam (Part 2): Those who were there are still fighting because the jungle changes a person.” The shows, dedicated to islander Christopher Gaynor and other veterans Nourse has interviewed, including George Nelson and Emma Amiad, will air on Voice of Vashon on Tuesdays at 4 p.m.
