Vaccination Clinics: Vashon Pharmacy staff and Vashon Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) volunteers are administering COVID, flu, and RSV vaccinations, with the assistance of VashonBePrepared and Vashon Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteers, at Vashon Pharmacy. Make appointments online now at vashonpharmacy.com. VashonBePrepared can assist those who don’t have insurance coverage and can’t afford the shots. Vashon school district will also offer vaccination clinics for COVID and flu for all school-aged children, taking place from 7:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at Vashon High School, and 7:30-10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16, at McMurray and Chautauqua. Food bank tours: Tour the current and future sites of the Vashon-Maury Community Food Bank with the food bank’s executive director and board members. The next tours take place from 2-3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10; and 3-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21. Each tour can accommodate 10 people. Fix-It Cafe: Vashon Fix-It Cafe will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Eagles clubhouse, 18134 Vashon Hwy SW. Bring in broken treasures and a team of experts will fix them and save them from the landfill — all for free. The group can fix furniture, jewelry, mend clothes, household appliances, electronics and lamps. Registration is required at vashonfixit.com.
Wellness and Screening Event: On Saturday, Oct. 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Vashon Health Care District, in partnership with Vashon’s Medical Reserve Corps, will offer a free screening and wellness event at JG Commons, at 17300 96th Place SW. All are welcome. A variety of health services and screenings will be available, blood pressure checks, glucose testing, vaccinations, hearing screenings, balance training and foot care. Vashon Library: Vashon Library will host a special all-ages (children must be accompanied by an adult) Halloween family story time from 11-12 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11. Enjoy stories, music, movement and rhymes that celebrate the season, and stay afterward to decorate a mini-pumpkin to take home. Also note that on Monday, Oct. 13, the library will be closed for all day staff training.
Garden Club: The Vashon-Maury Island Garden Club will hold its monthly meeting at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 13, at the Bethel Church gym. Guest speaker and master gardener Bruce Bennett will speak on the topic of growing perennial vegetables. Meetings are open to the public.
Brown Briefly: Listen to the Brown Briefly Show at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14 on 101.9 FM and streaming live at voiceofvashon.org and on the VoV mobile app. The show’s guest will longtime islander Martin Koenig, whose life’s work as an ethnographer, folklorist and photographer is now on display at Vashon Center for the Arts. Koenig’s exhibit “Balkan Echoes: Portraits of Southeast Europe (1962-1987),” is an archive of pre-industrial Balkan village life, rituals, music and dance in Balkan countries.
Indivisible Vashon: This progressive group invites islanders to join others across the country peacefully protesting against the Trump regime on Saturday, Oct. 18, at No Kings events. Indivisible Vashon is coordinating an event on that day at the four-way stop in Vashon town from 1-3 p.m., and also joining an event at the Seattle Center from 12-4 p.m. The Seattle-bound group will take the 10:35 a.m. water taxi and then march to Seattle Center. Make protest signs for the event from 5-7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, at the Backbone Campaign’s workspace in the Sheffield Building, at 18850 103rd Ave SW. All materials will be provided.

Public Sector Heroes Lectures: Dr. Larry Hubbell, in conjunction with Vashon Indivisible, will present three upcoming lectures about public sector heroes at Tuesdays, 7 p.m. Oct. 14 and 28, and Nov. 11, in the Vashon High School Theatre. Hubbell’s Oct. 14 talk will be centered on First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, contrasting her with another public figure of her time, Sen. Joseph McCarthy. Vashon Island Growers: VIGA’s 2nd annual Harvest Party fundraiser will take place from 2:30-6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at Farmstad, 12108 SW 148th Street.
