Island elder hosting party for seniors at VCC

All island seniors are invited to a party at Vashon Community Care Friday to celebrate their birthdays. The event is the fifth annual party organized by Dorothy Bauer, a 95-year-old islander who many describe as vivacious and filled with ideas. She has been hosting the parties since her 90th birthday in 2012.

This will be the first time the event is held at VCC as Bauer just recently became a resident after suffering a stroke several months ago. VCC Foundation Executive Director Verna Everitt said the center is “absolutely delighted” to continue Bauer’s tradition.

“How incredible is it to be so full of life … to extend the invitation to all seniors on Vashon Island?” Everitt said of Bauer. “She’s got such a big heart.”

This year, the party will be in honor of the Garrison brothers, longtime islanders who contributed to Vashon for more than five decades. Ken Garrison, who died last month, was an architect who designed many island homes, and Gerry Garrison ran the Burton Water Company from 1950 to 2007. Gerry said the party will include a short show of respect for those who have improved Vashon-Maury Island.

The party is a potluck and will take place at 3 p.m. in the VCC garden.
