Solstice dance

Summer solstice dances of universal peace will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 19, at the Puget Sound Zen Center, at S.W. 204th Street and Chautauqua Beach Drive.

Master gardeners

The master gardener clinic will meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, June 20, and Saturday, June 21, outside of True Value.

Master gardeners of Vashon will be available to help answer gardening questions, including plant ideas for damp areas of gardens.

Stop by for gardening advice, plant disease identification, available resource materials and more.

Wellness fair

The Vashon Island Growers Association (VIGA) will host the first annual Nutrition and Wellness Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at the Farmers Market in the Village Green.

This event will highlight the health benefits of fresh local food as well as the wide variety of life-enhancing practices and health care available to people on Vashon Island. Several Island health care providers will give a demonstration of their work.

Edible plant walk

Islanders are invited to discover the many varieties of edible wild plants in a native forest as naturalist Erin Kenny weaves stories about the plants and their modern and historical uses. Hikers should be prepared to forage as they go.

This walk is sponsored by the Vashon Park District, the Vashon Maury Island Land Trust, and Social Ecology Education and Demonstration School and must be signed up for through the Vashon Park District Web site, www.vashonparkdistrict.org.

Meet at Jensen Point for this walk in Burton Acres Park from 10 a.m to noon, Saturday, June 21. The cost is $10 per adult or $20 per family.

Adopt-a-cat day

Vashon Island Pet Protectors (VIPP) will host an adopt-a-cat day every Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Pandora’s Box.

NRA auction

The seventh annual Friends of the National Rifle Association (NRA) Banquet and Auction will be at the Vashon Sportsmen’s Club, 19720 Singer Rd. S.W., on Saturday, June 21. The social hour begins at 5 p.m. The dinner and auction begin at 7 p.m.

Labyrinth walk

The Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit invites the Vashon community to a summer solstice walk from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, June 22. Circle of Sound will play. They will surround the labyrinth, creating a sound vessel through the harmonic frequencies of crystal bowls and didgeridoos.

The labyrinth is located at the north end of the church grounds at 15420 Vashon Highway S.W. For more information, contact Betty Hawkins at 463-5062.

Chamber meeting

The next Vashon-Maury Island Chamber of Commerce general membership meeting will be at 9 a.m. Thursday, June 26, at Courthouse Square. Coffee and pastries will be offered. People should bring their business cards for networking; everyone is welcome.

Library late night

LateNight @ the Library featuring The Pharmacy will meet at the Vashon Library from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, June 28.

The Pharmacy will play outdoors in Ober Park at 7:30 p.m., and everyone is welcome to this part of LateNight.

Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution open play will be available in the library as usual. Kids can surf the Web or play a game. The library will be open only to students entering grades six through 12 in the fall.

Mosquito fleet reading

Island author Jean Cammon Findlay and co-author Robin Paterson will read from and sign “The Mosquito Fleet of South Puget Sound” at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 29, at the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Museum.

The book features hundreds of historic photographs of the steamships that served Vashon and Maury islands and nearby communities from the 1850s to the 1920s.

Music for kids

“Ladybug One” presented by Harmonica Pocket will be at the Ober Park building at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 29.

All ages are welcome to listen to instruments from around the world and dance along to original songs about ladybugs, spiders and bumblebees. Fun props, gentle songs and surprises are all part of the show.

Gospel choir forms

Islanders are invited to join the “Gospel in the Park” choir at Bethel Church.

Rehearsals will be held at Bethel from 7 to 8:30 p.m. beginning June 30 and continuing July 1, 3, 7, 8 and 10.

The group will sing at Ober Park betweem 1:15 and 2 p.m. Sunday July 13, for the Strawberry Festival crowd.
