New dog daycare and boarding business opens near south end

After a two-year hiatus, islander Tammy Thomas is back in the Vashon pet-care business with Pampered Paws Boarding Kennel and Doggie Daycare.

Thomas previously operated Pampered Paws dog grooming service out of Vashon Village until an arm injury forced her to take a break.

But with some healing and the recent purchase of a 19-acre property just south of Inspiration Point, Thomas is ready to return to her passion of caring for animals — albeit in a bit of a different way than before.

“This is primarily daycare and boarding, with limited grooming,” she noted, about the change in her operation, adding that daycare clients will have the option of their canine companions receiving a bath before pick up time.

Thomas said that her arm injury is the issue as far as grooming goes, but she will have a few spots available each day. She will also offer drop-in nail trims during certain hours.

In the pet care business for 17 years, Thomas said she knew she’d found her calling when in college and living in the Green Lake area of Seattle. She said she would often make rounds through the neighborhood to collect strays and then would find them new homes.

“I have three cats, three dogs and a house pig,” she mused. “I believe all animals deserve to be pampered like one of the family. If I have a bad day at work, I hang out with the animals. They make me happy. I am very excited to be able to offer this to the island community.”

Pampered Paws, at 26740 Vashon Highway, opened for business last week, and Thomas may have an open house in October. Daycare hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days/week. The property has a fenced and secure yard, with separated areas if needed, and a large indoor space, also with separated areas, for the dogs to run and play. The boarding facility provides each dog with its own bed, blanket and toys, and boarding dogs are allowed to play with daycare pups during those hours. Call Thomas at 206-463-1870 to arrange care.
