Local rowers recognized

The George Pocock Rowing Foundation, a Pacific Northwest rowing organization, will honor Vashon sculler Jacob Plihal during its 17th annual “Row to the Future” breakfast next week.

Plihal, recipient of the George Pocock Excellence Award for an outstanding athlete, is a 2024 Paris Olympian and U.S. record holder in the men’s single sculls. Two other current Vashon Island Rowing Club youth leaders were also nominated for their leadership: Laurel Calhoun, VIRC co-captain and Selene Delinis, VIRC junior board representative.

The breakfast is from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. on March 21 at the Sheraton Grand Seattle and celebrates the value of rowing in the Pacific Northwest. For more information and to RSVP, visit pocockfoundation.org/events/rttf17.

Public meetings

The following taxing districts, government bodies and citizen groups have civic meetings coming up:

• Vashon Island School District’s next board meeting begins at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March. 13, at Chautauqua Elementary School, Room 302, 9309 SW Cemetery Road.

• Vashon Health Care District’s next board meeting is at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March. 19 at the Vashon Presbyterian Church, 17708 Vashon Hwy SW, and on Zoom. Visit vashonhealthcare.org for more information.

This article has been corrected; it previously inaccurately stated that Jacob Plihal holds the world record holder in the men’s single sculls. He holds the U.S. record.
