Vashon students earn scholarship
Two Vashon High School seniors are the recipients of $5,000 each in scholarships from Our Community Credit Union (OURCU): Avery Davis and Lily Thornton.
OURCU awarded a total of $50,000 across 10 students who are attending a college or vocational or technical school in the fall, in the regions of Mason, Grays Harbor and Thurston counties and Vashon Island, where it operates.
Strawberry train
The Vashon Chamber of Commerce is fundraising to revive an old tradition at this year’s Strawberry Festival — a working carnival train — as a free activity for kids and families. It’s not budgeted for the event this year, said chamber Executive Director Nichole Banducci, so the Chamber is trying to raise $6,100 to cover the train costs.
Also at Festival this year, she said, the Kid Zone will move to the Ober Park play area grassy fields, and Camp Sealth with work with the Chamber to offer kid activities — including bounce houses, face painting, crafts and more.

New girls’ summer camp
One Village, the youth engagement project of the Journeymen nonprofit, will this August host an eight-day rite of passage camp for high school girls called “WILD.”
The experience will bring girls together in nature for creative expression, conversations about bodies and identity, journaling, learning from elders, sleeping under the stars, cooking and eating together, and moving through dance, yoga and other practices.
