King County will install 25 miles per hour pavement “legends” on Vashon Highway near the entrance to the Quartermaster Yacht Club (QYC) in Burton, according to the county.
That decision, announced in late January, follows a request by QYC rear commodore Tim Chiswell for those pavement legends, and a longer series of pleas by yacht club members for pedestrian safety measures in the area, where some of the club’s nearly 200 members regularly park before hiking down the steps to the recreational boating facility.
The legends will remind drivers of the speed limit and to slow down prior to passing the yacht club.
”We will likely add the markings this spring when the weather is dry and not too cold,” county roads department spokesperson Broch Bender said.
The decision also comes after a story in the Jan. 16 edition of The Beachcomber detailing the QYC member’s requests.
“QYC is neither happy nor unhappy with the end result,” Chiswell said in an email to The Beachcomber. “Something is always better than no response at all. The only agenda is/was to promote public safety for pedestrians and the fatality that is avoidable and preventable.”
QYC members initially called on King County to install a crosswalk by the stairs to the Burton-area marina. But county officials said the location did not meet their requirements, and warned that marked crosswalks can create a false sense of security for pedestrians and lead to driver complacency — nationally, there are more collisions in marked crosswalks than in unmarked crosswalks.
Some anonymous individuals took the matter into their own hands, painting an unauthorized crosswalk on the road, which has since been scrubbed away.
