Scholarships for seniors to be awarded Wednesday evening

The Vashon Community Scholarship Foundation will host its annual awards ceremony this evening and provide financial support for more than 100 graduating seniors.

This year, each participating student will receive at least $750, according to Ellen Call, a board member of the foundation. More than $150,000 will be awarded this year.

To be eligible, students needed to complete a scholarship notebook with their transcripts, recommendations and work experiences as well as information about their interests, hobbies and future plans. Last year, Call said, the average award was $1,500.

The awards are determined by donors, such as nonprofits and those offering memorial scholarships, a scholarship foundation panel and the larger scholarship committee.

The foundation was created more than 30 years ago and has provided more than $1.5 million in scholarship assistance since then.

The ceremony will be at 6 p.m. at the Vashon High School gym.
