Snow, lower than normal temperatures come to Vashon

The National Weather Service said temperatures would be “unseasonably cold” throughout the week.

Snow has covered Vashon and temperatures have continued to drop lower than typically expected for this time of year.

On Monday, Dec. 27, the National Weather Service released a Special Weather Statement for Vashon regarding the cold temperatures.

“Temperatures will remain unseasonably cold through most of the week with highs in the mid-20s to mid-30s and lows in the 20s,” read the statement.

The National Weather Service’s extended forecast for Vashon also shows another possibility of snow on Thursday, Dec. 30 and Friday, Dec. 31.

Road conditions on the island remain hazardous, and King County Metro has canceled bus service on the island as part of the activation of its Emergency Snow Network on Monday, Dec. 27. Metro will continue to assess road conditions to determine if they can operate the full transit network.

Throughout the island, there are also several daytime warming centers available. Vashon Presbyterian Church will be open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The church will also be offering hand and foot warmers as well. In addition, Vashon Library will be open Tuesday and Wednesday from 1 to 8 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
