Vashon airport closed for two months

Vashon Municipal Airport closed Monday and will remain closed for two months while work is underway to make the runway safer.

Currently, a large ditch runs parallel to the runway and utility lines are above ground. Over the next two months, the ditch will be filled in and the slope leading down to it will be leveled off. Utility lines will also be buried near the south end of the runway. The work is being funded by a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Kaye Pierson, a member of the King County Airport District, said there are “all sorts of markers” indicating the airport is closed and there is also a NOTAM — a written notification issued to pilots before a flight, advising them of circumstances — out on the FAA’s system.
