VYFS to hold annual Wellness Day event

In an effort to introduce health and wellness resources to the community, Vashon Youth & Family Services will hold its second annual Wellness Day on Saturday at the Methodist church.

The free event will offer blood pressure checks, acupuncture, haircuts, massages, arts and crafts activities for kids, garden and vegetable starts and free bicycle helmets for children. Representatives from several local service organizations will also be on hand to talk about their programs.

“I see it as a way to build a bridge for the community,” Deborah Rieschl, VYFS case manager and event organizer, said.

At last year’s event, 100 people received a variety of services free of charge, including:

– acupuncture

– foot care

– haircuts

– chair massages

– blood sugar testing

– blood pressure checks and flu shots

“This outreach into the community is intended to connect people who may be isolated, unwell or economically disenfranchised, with free and easy to access services,” Roderick McClain, VYFS grant writer and Special Projects Manager said. “The broader goal is to normalize the notion of preventative healthcare while connecting people with immediate resources.”

Every person who attends will be entered into a drawing for a $100 Granny’s Attic gift card, and lunch will be provided, as will childcare.

“This is a great opportunity for those who might otherwise not be able to, to get out and enjoy a little self care,” Meagan Fitzgerald, VYFS Hispanic and Latino Resource Specialist, said. “Parents can drop their children off downstairs, and pop upstairs for a chair massage, acupuncture or a hair cut. Everyone deserves a chance to relax and feel good about themselves.”

VYFS’ Wellness Day will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Methodist church. The event is free and open to all. For more information, call VYFS at 206-463-5511.
