WinterFest is back in full swing, celebrate Chanukah with the Havurah and more.

WinterFest is here

Follow Santa to Vashon’s annual tree lighting ceremony in Vashon Village. The walking parade (no vehicles, please) is open to everyone. Meet in front of Vashon Theatre at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, or enjoy the show from the sidewalks. Vashon Highway will be closed between 171st and 178th Street from 5 to 7 p.m. for safety and room for celebration. The parade will conclude with the tree lighting at Vashon Village. Mask up and celebrate the start of a joyful holiday season.

Chanukah Party

The Vashon Havurah will host a Chanukah party from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Vashon Cohousing Common House, located at 10421 SW Bank Road. A vegetarian potluck dinner with latkes will be served. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own menorahs and candles and there will also be live klezmer music, performed by Croaker. Proof of vaccination is required; masks are required when not eating.

Anger Management Training Offered

The Vashon Community Care Team will offer an online anger management training to assist in getting through pandemic-charged times. This training is from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4; sign up at bit.ly/316axCT. Speaker Wren Hudgins, Ph.D., is a member of the Vashon Community Care Team. He also works as a supervisor in disaster mental health for the American Red Cross and serves on the Behavioral Health Strike Team for the state Department of Health.

Styrofoam and Plastics Recycling Event

Stop by the Sheffield Building, located at 18850 103rd Ave SW, for the First Sunday Styrofoam and Plastics Recycling Event. This event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5. Affordable Housing Talk

Christy Clement, president of Vashon HouseHold’s board, will speak about the affordable housing crisis on Vashon at the Vashon Senior Center from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, discussing topics such as skyrocketing home prices, rental shortages, and the work of Vashon HouseHold.

Preschool hosts talk

Vashon-Maury Cooperative Preschool invites islanders to attend “Conversations with Children Part I: Let’s Talk About Race and Racism,” from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, via Zoom at tinyurl.com/ys8svj5h. This conversation, led by Jamie Cho, Ph.D., will center on race and how to talk with children and answer their questions about racial differences and racism.

VIPP Bake Sale

Rejoice — Vashon Island Pet Protectors (VIPP) Holiday Bake Sale is back, outdoors between Thriftway and Ace Hardware between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11.

Find out about Guide Dogs

The Vashon Low Vision Group presents its final program of the year from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2 at the Vashon Senior Center. The group will hear from Charlotte Phillips, leader of Vashon’s Guide Dogs for the Blind, and how the program trains dogs to help those in the community with vision issues.
