Start Thanksgiving Day with Turkey Trot

Vashon’s annual Turkey Trot fun run/walk will return to downtown Vashon at 9 a.m., on Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 25. Start in the parking lot next to Recess Lab and Voice of Vashon, 17641 Vashon Highway SW. The short 2.5-mile fun run/walk — with music, hot cider, camaraderie and joie de vivre — is free and also open to furry friends and strollers. A map of the course will be available at the event. It may be muddy! This year’s Turkey Trot is hosted by Vashon XC, the booster club for youth cross country on the island.

Attend reading, book signing in Seattle

An in-person reading and book signing by Ann Spiers and David Berger will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at the University of Washington Bookstore, at 4326 University Way NE, Seattle. Spiers will read from “Back Cut” (Black Heron), monologues from a husband and wife, post-WWII, eking out a living digging razor clams on Washington beaches. Berger will read from “Razor Clams,” his non-fiction history of Washington’s razor clams, published by UW Press.

Interview with K. Wyking Garrett on Voice of Vashon

Tune in at 12 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23 for Susan McCabe’s interview on Voice of Vashon with K. Wyking Garrett, CEO of Seattle’s Africatown Community Land Trust. Garrett will discuss a model for tackling reparations effectively and from a variety of angles.

Garrett was recognized in 2019 by the Seattle Times as one of the 13 most influential people in Seattle and works to support and revitalize the Black community in the Central District through creating affordable housing and supporting black-owned businesses.

Trivia Night at Vashon Brewing Community Pub

Join in at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21 for Trivia Night at the Community Pub. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination and $5 cover are required to participate. $10 gift certificates are awarded to the winning team members.

Shop Talk: “Unshopping the Holidays”

Shop Talk is a series of community forums focused on sustainability, consumerism, and climate change. Join for the first of the series at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1., “Unshopping the Holidays.”

The forum will be hosted by Siobhan McComb of One Glass Bottle. McComb will discuss the “How To’s” of reducing personal consumerism during the holiday season.
