Group discusses new burial methods in Washington, a reminder to stop for school buses and more.

Stop for school buses

Vashon Island School District has alerted the community, via an email, that there has been an increase in drivers who are not stopping for VISD buses that are picking up and dropping off students.

According to Washington state law, all cars going in both directions must stop for school buses in order to allow for students to safely cross the street. The King County Sheriff’s Office will follow VISD buses and cite violators.

Celebrate opening of new Judd Creek trail

Join the Vashon-Maury Island Land Trust in celebrating the opening of the new Judd Creek trail from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26. Parking is in the gravel lot at Judd Creek Preserve, on 111th St SW, about 300 feet south of the 204th turn.

World Polio Day Fundraiser

The Vashon Island Rotary is holding its World Polio Day fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, at Thriftway.

Rotary members will be outside Thriftway promoting Polio awareness and asking for donations to support polio eradication efforts. All donations will be matched by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Acclaimed filmmaker debuts doc series

“Vashon Verité,” a new film series hosted by Academy Award-nominated director Charlie Siskel, will kick off this week at Vashon Center for the Arts. Screenings of two major films made by Siskel will be followed by post-show discussions with the filmmaker. Buy tickets at vashoncenterforthearts.org.

“American Anarchist,” will be screened at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, at VCA. The 2016 film details the legacy of an incendiary counter-culture manual, “The Anarchist Cookbook,” written by William Powell in 1971 at the age of 19. “Finding Vivian Maier,” will be screened at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, at VCA. This film, about a reclusive nanny and her secret life as a photographer, was nominated for a 2015 Academy Award, Emmy Award, Writers Guild Award, and Directors Guild Award.

‘Let’s Talk about Living and Dying’ hosts meeting

The group, Let’s Talk about Living and Dying, will offer a talk on “New Options for Burial” at their quarterly session, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, on Zoom.

Lisa Devereau, Director of Island Funeral Service, will speak about new funeral options for loved ones in Washington, including natural organic reduction and alkaline hydrolysis. There will also be discussion regarding the progress of the Vashon Green Cemetery Committee. There will be an opportunity for questions, and a discussion will follow.

Sign up for Health Insurance

King County Public Health will be on Vashon from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, at the Vashon Library, to assist with signing up for health insurance. Spanish speakers will be present. Coverage will begin the following month. At this event, attendees can also apply for ORCA LIFT, King County’s reduced metro fare program, and food stamps.
