James (Jim) Edward Bruya| Dec. 10, 1950 – Sept. 20, 2025
James “Jim” Bruya found his happy place on Vashon Island, where he loved walking the beach, cheering at the P2P, hosting “Christmas in July” parties, and sharing his famous paella with friends and family.
Born in Niskayuna, New York, Jim’s curiosity and determination shaped his life from the start. He graduated summa cum laude in Chemistry from Washington State University, earned his Ph.D. from Stanford, and co-founded Friedman & Bruya, Inc., an environmental lab known for its integrity and scientific rigor.
Jim and his wife, Robin, married in 1990 and built a life centered on family, friendship, and community. Their daughters, Elizabeth and Ann, were his greatest joy — he never missed a meet, concert, or road trip adventure.
Jim will be remembered for his brilliance, humor, kindness, and the generosity he brought to every relationship.
He is survived by Robin, Elizabeth, Ann, and his four sisters. A celebration of Jim’s life will be held October 25 at noon at Vashon Center for the Arts. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Vashon Maury Community Food Bank or Vashon Center for the Arts.
