Kelly Wheat

Kelly G. Wheat died in his sleep Sept. 25, 2002, at his home of 50 years on Vashon Island.

He was born July 20, 1916, to Alfred and Helen Voland. Mr. Wheat moved to Vashon with his family in 1951. He retired from King County Public Works in 1978, where he drove road equipment.

Kelly was a man who wore many hats. He was a captain in the then newly-formed Seattle Police Reserve Unit in the late 1940s and 1950s. He held a commission in the King County Sheriff’s Department. He was appointed State Game Protection Officer in the late 1950s for Vashon.

He was fire commissioner for Fire District #13 in the 1970s. He was the past member of the the Mark P. Waterman Masonic Lodge and past president of the West Seattle Shrine Club.

He was also a Charter Member of the Ocean Shores/North Beach Elks, a member of the Vashon Eagles, a member of the Vashon Golf and Country Club and the Vashon Sportsman’s Club.

His wife Olga died earlier.

Survivors include a son Michael and his wife Dianne, step daughter Karen Calhoun and her husband Richard; sister Naomi Buzard and her husband Gene, seven grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

A memorial will be later.

The family requests that any remembrances be in the form of contributions to the Shrine Hospitals.
