Steve Andrus passed away on February 6, 2018, after a brief illness, surrounded by his family at home on Vashon Island, Washington. Born in Hood River, Oregon on February 1, 1929, to Hal and Dorothy Andrus, Steve spent his youth in Oregon and graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in Civil Engineering. After graduation,

he served as a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army.

In 1955, he met Jean, who became his wife of 62 years. Steve and Jean moved to Orofino, Idaho, for two years, and then Steve’s career took them to the San Francisco Bay Area in California. From 1957 through 1994 Steve worked in the water works supply industry, culminating with ownership of the Roberts and Brune Company in Redwood City. Most at home in the Pacific Northwest, Steve and Jean settled on Vashon Island in 1996 and became active in the local community. Steve used his expertise gained from years with water works supply to serve on the Dockton Water Board. He was a Mason, Shriner, and member of the Vashon Sportsman’s Club. Steve enjoyed his involvement with the Vashon Fruit Club and happily supplied his apple harvest for each year’s pressing. He knew the best spots for picking blackberries and huckleberries, and was known for his ability to bake the perfect pie.

Steve loved the outdoors, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He cared deeply about land stewardship, and spent many hours working in reforestation and salmon stream rehabilitation at his property on Condon Creek near the Oregon Coast. He passed on these passions to his family, who joined him every year to fish for Chinook salmon in the remote waters of Rivers Inlet, B.C.

Above all else, Steve loved his family. He is preceded in death by his parents Hal and Dorothy, and his brother Cecil. Steve is survived by his wife Jean, sons Gregg and Jeff, daughters-in-law Sherrie and Michele, daughter Nancy, and sister Margi.

He took great pride in his children, and seven grandchildren: Colin, Katherine, Caitlin, Tara, Amanda, Kristin, and Marissa. Steve touched many lives and will be deeply missed, however at his request there will be no memorial service.
