As I prepare to step down as fire chief of Vashon Island Fire & Rescue, I find myself reflecting on what an incredible journey these past two and a half years have been.
This time on Vashon has been transformative not only for the district but for me personally. Serving this vibrant, close-knit community has been one of the greatest honors of my career in the fire service.
When I joined VIFR in 2022, the district faced significant challenges. We were a department stretched thin, with a shrinking workforce and aging resources. Together, with the support of our dedicated staff, board members, and most importantly, you — the community — we have turned those challenges into opportunities. Through a shared vision and commitment to excellence, we have built something truly remarkable.
Our successes are a testament to the collective effort of so many. We expanded our team of career firefighters, increasing both staffing and safety. We opened Burton Fire Station 56, dramatically improving response times on the south end of Vashon and Maury Island. We modernized our fleet, ensuring our first responders have the tools they need to serve you effectively. We developed and implemented a strategic plan to chart a clear course for the future, and together we passed a critical levy to secure the district’s financial stability. These achievements would not have been possible without the trust and support of this community.
One of the projects I am most proud of is the launch and growth of the Mobile Integrated Health (MIH) program. This innovative initiative has allowed us to provide critical healthcare services to islanders directly in their homes, addressing a wide range of needs and ensuring that care is accessible and close to home. Expanding this program will continue to be a priority for the district, and I know that the capable hands leading VIFR will ensure its continued success and growth.
It’s important to note that these accomplishments are not the work of one individual but the collective efforts of an exceptional team. I have been inspired every day by the dedication, professionalism, and heart of the firefighters, EMTs, and staff at VIFR. They have leaned into challenges with courage and determination, always putting the community’s safety and well-being at the forefront. I am especially grateful to Deputy Chief Ben Davidson, whose leadership and vision will continue to guide the district during this transition and beyond.
I look ahead to my new role and the opportunities that await with Spokane County Fire District #9. Leaving this community is not easy. Vashon has become a second home for my family and me. We have been touched by the kindness, resilience, and spirit of the people here, and I will carry that with me always.
In the coming weeks, I will work closely with the board and staff to ensure a smooth transition. I am confident that VIFR is positioned to continue building on the progress we’ve made. The future is bright, and I am excited to see this community and this district continue to thrive.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for welcoming me, trusting me, and supporting our mission to serve and protect this island. I am forever grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of this incredible community. I will always look back on my time here with pride and fondness.
