Editorial: Destined for fun

Destination Vashon is here!

Inside this week’s paper, you’ll find the fruits of our labor to share the best of Vashon’s recreation, eats, arts and culture: our Destination Vashon guide.

Destination Vashon is an annual tradition at The Beachcomber. It’s a visitor’s guide filled with listings of the island’s restaurants, beaches, trails, arts exhibits, main events and more. It’s also a resident’s guide — a celebration of our culture and a handy mini-encyclopedia.

We hope you’ll enjoy our slate of feature stories this year, which include a celebration of the island’s July 4 hydro run by Brian Brenno; a deep dive into the island’s marine habitats by Bianca Perla and Maria Metler of the Vashon Nature Center; a primer on Passport2Pain by Pat Call; a breakdown of island park facilities by the Vashon Park District; a list of the island’s biggest celebrations and festivals by Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Nichole Banducci; a celebration of the island’s Japanese heritage from the Friends of Mukai; an introduction to the island’s new pinball joint from Mo and Jacqueline Davis; and an introduction to Vashon Opera by Allison Pohl, its artistic director.

Destination is a team effort, involving publisher Daralyn Anderson, ad salesperson Patricia Seaman, reporter Liz Shepherd and editor Alex Bruell. Bryon Kempf, a talented graphic designer with Sound Publishing, has once again put together a stunning, stately, professional product alongside us.

It’s also made possible by the generosity and skill of local photographers who help us fill its pages with beautiful scenes of the island, from opera singers to pinball players. Thanks in particular are due to Ray Pfortner, Jim Diers, Steve Rocketkar, Michelle Bates, Elise Giordano, Peter Serko, Marla Smith and Brian Brenno.

There’s so much you can do with Destination Vashon. Share it with visiting friends. Show it off on your coffee table. Visit a new restaurant for date night. We pour a lot of love into Destination, and we hope it shows.
