LETTER: End of Providence contract requires changes

The good and accurate article by Susan Riemer has caused many feelings in my soul (“Providence Health decides to cut ties with VCC,” April 19).

I have served Vashon Community Care (VCC) and its residents for over 10 years. My mother lived the last five years of her life there, I served on the board for over eight years and for almost three years as financial administrator. My term on the board ended in December. I am dismayed that the VCC board has allowed the relationship between Providence and VCC to end. This action must be explained to the island community, for it is the community that is the source of part of the administrator’s budget through donations to VCC and through its support and attending VCC-sponsored events.

I make the following observations:

I have worked with the management team for all of the years I have been part of the VCC family. They are highly skilled professionals and all have the best interests of the residents entrusted to their care in their hearts. They will carry on regardless of how the board now behaves.

The board must now make the best possible administrative arrangements so that VCC can continue to provide the best care for our residents and patients. It is here that the families, in particular, should be concerned, and to question the board.

The need for continued financial support is greater now than since we asked the island to support the refinancing of the mortgage. If any reader is ready to make a special donation to VCC, now would be the time. My heart is heavy for this pass of events, and now is the time for the board to support the residents and the community.
