LETTER: Levy overstates need, vote ‘no’

I write as someone who has benefited directly and recently from the capable and effective Vashon Island Fire & Rescue (VIFR). The fire district needs to come back with a more reasonable levy proposal.

Does the district need to dramatically increase its levy? Yes. Does the levy have to be increased to the maximum amount of $1.50? No. This levy over states need. There are options which gouge less and achieve the same results.

For instance, this proposed levy explicitly authorizes VIFR to pay cash for its new engines and aid cars — as it has done in the prior century. This is not modern practice. Progressive and very capable fire departments have long ago moved into the more common practice of financing or leasing vehicles. A more reasonable levy increase to $1.38 (15 cents less than what is demanded now) will provide all the funds for all the needed staff increases, the lease of new engines/aid cars and, deferred maintenance. A more modest levy amount succeeds without breaking the bank.

Please do not be seduced by the fear campaign. This is no ‘do-or-die’ mandate at this highest percentage number. This levy failing to pass will not jeopardize the safety of the community. As was the case with the school bond defeat, the fire district will quickly propose a more reasonable levy that will more reasonably protect our community and our pocketbook.

Crying “fire!” is a compelling call. I’ve been there recently and I know both the terror of the fire — and the relief of the VIFR engine arriving. But even VIFR needs to be more thoughtful. This levy overstates what is needed.

Vote “no” on Proposition 1.
