After a month of protests, political skirmishes and wild weather, Glacier Northwest is stopping work on its controversial barge-loading pier off of Maury Island.
It was 45 years ago that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. and closed his famous “I Have a Dream” speech with these words: “Free at last, free at last, thank God almighty, we are free at last.”
As a concerned property owner, parent and someone who has studied property taxes on this Island, I’d like to share my perspective regarding the school board’s proposal to renovate Vashon High School and make important improvements to McMurray Middle School and Chautauqua Elementary. These renovations are necessary, and the scale and cost of this project is reasonable.
It’s a new year. We have a new president and a new sense of possibilities. Hopes should be running very high on this bright and clear morning.
We are writing this letter as the nine Vashon-Maury residents who risked arrest on Friday, Jan. 2, blockading the two main entrances of the Glacier Northwest gravel mine on Maury Island.

Kudos to the Islanders who are stepping forward to show their opposition to Glacier Northwest’s construction project on Maury Island.
Words have histories that are often revealing. The words “being” and “dwelling,” for example, have the same Germanic linguistic root: the word buan. So to say in German, “Ich bin,” or, “I am” also means, “I dwell.” What’s more, the Old Saxon word wuon, which is related to buan, adds a very important, if subtle additional meaning: that of “sparing” or “preserving”—that is, being in an actively caretaking relationship with the place where you live.
As we say goodbye to 2008, I thought it appropriate to talk about how far we’ve come as a school district this year and to touch upon where we want to go as stewards of tomorrow.
The Washington State Ferry Advisory Committee will hold a public hearing on Vashon next week to seek Islanders’ opinions on potential service cuts, pricing strategies and other proposals contained within the ferry system’s newly released draft long-range plan.
But at a small community newspaper like ours, the staff is only part of the picture. The fact is, we rely to a huge degree on the community to help us fill our pages week after week — another group of dedicated Islanders who write for us, take photographs, send us news tips and provide news releases.
