VoV shuffles the programming deck

Our programs will play out across the week in slots that create a different personality for each day

Voice of Vashon approaches its 20th anniversary next month. We can barely believe it’s been less than four years since we moved into the Jean Bosch Broadcast Studio in town, because since then, the number of radio programs on our air has nearly tripled. KVSH now has 44 different shows broadcasting locally and streaming globally every week.

Up until now, we simply added new shows wherever there was space on the calendar. “Wanna play reggae? I think we have an open slot next to this talk show on healthcare.”

It was always ironic that in a storefront location that once housed a quilt shop, we’d built a radio station that was itself a patchwork of wildly different shows playing at random times of day. So to help you — and us — make better sense of our offerings, we shuffled a lot of sticky notes around and emerged with a new KVSH Program Calendar.

Of course, the one constant is that each weekday morning from 9 a.m. to noon, the Morning Scramble settles you into your day with music, conversation and the individual brand of hijinks you’ve come to expect from each host.

Starting next Monday, Aug. 26, our nearly four dozen programs will play out across the week in slots that create a different personality for each day:

Mojo Monday – Here’s where you’ll find Rik Reed’s Motown show “R.E.S.P.E.C.T.” along with three hours of great rhythm and blues from DJs Java and Mojo Mike, topped off with one of Bill Wood’s more than 400 episodes of “The Jazz Guy.”

Talk Tuesday – Did you know KVSH streams and broadcasts 10 different talk shows? Every Tuesday you’ll hear conversation, both witty and serious, about contemporary island issues, along with shows that explore literature, health and healing, cooking, sports, storytelling and the lives of island personalities.

Americana Wednesday – It’s a slice of home on Wednesday with folk music on “Big Lonesome Radio,” great country music from high atop “Barstool Mountain” and the best of the best from the Lone Star State on “Boogie Back to Texas.”

Eclectic Thursday – Everything but the kitchen sink goes into our Thursday lineup starting with reggae from the “Borderlines” and music that goes “Beyond Category.” Arlette’s “Moody Hours” explores classical, Latin and whatever style of music fits her mood, followed by everything from alternative to world music on “Island Eclectic” and thematically-linked music sweeps on “Headsets.”

Funtabulous Friday – Tune in Friday for all kinds of great music and lots of laughs. Most anything can happen on “The Mostly True Radio Show” with Chris Austin. Most everything does happen on “The BROADcast” with the Fabulous Filson Sisters. And you cannot stop the “Whiskey Jim Hour.” You can only hope to contain it.

Rock the Rock Saturday – All of our rock shows hit the air on Saturday, starting with the best of the ’50s and ’60s on “Voltaire’s Vault.” Then we go “Back in the Stacks” with DJ Rik, catch “The Wave” with Trent Kelly, consult the “Rock of Ages” with Sammy V and paddle through “Atmospheric Rivers” with DJ Billy.

Vintage Sunday – The day starts mellow on “Sunday Mornings with Java,” then stays in the acoustic realm with “The Rolling Wave” and “Forest Halls Celtic.” before “Vintage J&B” kicks off six hours of conversation, poetry, show tunes (“Broadway Baby”) and musical history (“The Year in Music”), capped off with another episode from “The Jazz Guy” collection.

Whenever a particular show isn’t playing, selections from a variety of musical genres will fill in the gaps like mortar between bricks. KVSH is also refreshing our repertoire of music from beloved island artists, so send us your latest recordings at voiceofvashon.org/submit.

We hope you’ll find the days that fit your interests and give us a drive at 101.9 FM next time you’re headed into town. If you miss a day, all 44 of our producer DJs have committed to making their most recent episode available for on-demand streaming at voiceofvashon.org. Finally, as always, thanks for listening to Voice of Vashon, Your Island Connection.
