Baseball collects two wins after weeks of delays

The rains let up and after a two-week delay, the Vashon High School boys’ baseball team finally got some games in last week.

On Monday, April 17, the boys traveled to Charles Wright Academy for a game they won 8-3. Vashon got things going in the second inning with a single from Bryce Beaty followed by another single from Ary Dulfer which advanced Beaty to third. Aiden McCann then hit a double scoring Beaty and advancing Dulfer to third. Then, Isaac Patchin’s single scored Dulfer and movied McCann onto third. An error by Charles Wright brought him home and a double play ended the inning.

Pirate Levi Myer started the game as the pitcher and, in the second inning, walked four Charles Wright batters, giving up a run. The second inning ended with Vashon up 3-1.

There was no scoring again until the fifth inning when Pirate Andreas Stark led off with a single and was sacrificed to second on a bunt by Tyler Lowell. A single by Myer brought Stark home. Then, in the bottom of the fifth, Myer gave up two singles for one run leaving the score at the end of five innings at 4-2.

In the sixth inning, both Dulfer and Wyatt Yates were hit by pitches and with runners on first and second, McCann bunted, Charles Wright commited an error and both Dulfer and Yates scored. McCann ended up on third. Isaac Patchin walked and McCann scored on a ground out as Patchin went to second. Dulfer then drove him home with a single. A ground out ended the inning.

Pitcher Myer gave up a homer to start the bottom of the sixth and was replaced by McCann. The inning ended with Vashon up 8-3.

The game ended after the seventh inning with Vashon winning 8-3. Stark and Beaty each had two hits and Tyler Lowell, Ashton Dulfer, Myer, Ary Dulfer, McCann and Patchin each had a hit for Vashon. Stark led Vashon with two RBIs and Ary Dulfer, Myer, McCann and Patchin each had one RBI.

Myer went five innings pitching for the win with McCann pitching two innings in relief.

On Wednesday, April 19, Vashon again traveled to Charles Wright. But, because of logistics, Vashon was the home team. This game was one of the longest in memory as it went 11 innings with Vashon staging a big comeback to win it 9-8.

Armando Oatman started on the hill for Vashon and gave up three runs in the first inning. Vashon was not able to answer, so at the end of one, it was 3-0 Charles Wright.

Charles Wright was held in the second and, in the bottom half of the second, Myer led off with a double and Yates ripped another double to score Myer. At the end of the second inning, the score stood at 3-1 Charles Wright.

Neither Charles Wright nor Vashon scored in the third inning. But, at the top of the fourth, two walks and two errors by Vashon caused Charles Wright to score four to make it 7-1 Charles Wright. Despite singles by Ashton Dulfer and Beaty, Vashon was unable to score in the fourth.

In the fifth inning, McCann took over pitching duties with the bases loaded and one out. He got out of the inning with no runs as Ary Dulfer caught a fly ball in the outfield and threw to get the runner out at first for a double play. Vashon had nothing in the bottom of the fifth and the score stayed at 7-1 Charles Wright.

In the sixth, Pirate Yates came in to pitch and would put Charles Wright down. Vashon’s Lowell led off the inning with a single; Ashton Dulfer was safe on an error. Then, Myer hit a home run, which brought in both Lowell and Ashton Dulfer and ignited the team. Ary Dulfer walked and Yates got his second double of the game, which moved Ashton Dulfer to third. McCann sacrificed scoring Ashton Dulfer and the inning ended on a strikeout with the score at end of six, 7-6 Charles Wright.

Yates pitched a clean seventh inning with two strikeouts. Vashon’s Lowell walked, Ashton Dulfer hit a bunt single moving Lowell to second and Myer walked, loading the bases. Beaty singled in the tying run and the inning ended with a score of 7-7.

Yates pitched another uneventful inning in the eighth with no change in score. In the ninth inning, Charles Wright loaded the bases with two outs and Yates got an inning-ending ground out to record no score. At the bottom of the ninth, Ashton Dulfer came in safe on an error and Myer and Beatty both walked, loading the bases with one out. But Vashon couldn’t score and at the end of nine, the score remained tied at 7-7.

Neither team was able to move into home base in the 10th inning and the score stayed tied.

At the top of the 11th inning, Ashton Dulfer hit two batters and walked both, which gave Charles Wright one run. Ary Dulfer then came in to pitch and held Charles Wright to only the one run. In the bottom of the 11th, Ary Dulfer, Yates and Beaty all walked to load the bases with one out. Vashon’s Will Gard came up big with a single to bring in the tying run at 8-8. With the bases loaded, Pirate Stark hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored Yates from third giving Vashon the win, 9-8, after a marathon game.

Yates led the hitting, collecting three hits with two doubles. Ashton Dulfer, Beaty and Myer each had two hits. Lowell and Gard each got a hit. RBIs were led by Myer with three, Beaty with two and Stark, Yates, McCann and Gard with one apiece. Oatman, McCann, Yates, Ashton Dulfer and Ary Dulfer all pitched. Yates went four solid scoreless innings giving Vashon a chance to catch up in the middle of the game. Ary Dulfer got the win.

Vashon’s victorious run ended Saturday when the team lost both ends of a double header to Bellevue Christian on Saturday: 12-7 and 6-3.

Weather permitting, the boys will play a home game at 4 p.m. today, Wednesday, against Cascade Christian. They will play Cascade again in an away game at 3:45 p.m. Friday and will spend Saturday at a home doubleheader beginning at noon against The Overlake School. The game will end the baseball season and post-season play will begin May 9. The Pirates are currently fourth of five teams in the Nisqually League.
