Cross-country season ends with state championships race

The team finished the season with a party to reminisce and hand out awards.

The Pirate harriers finished their season on Saturday, Nov. 5, in Pasco, with the State Championships.

Pirate Captain Madeline Yarkin and Cecelia Guenther traveled there and back, through harrowing weather, to race to 37th and 99th place over the rolling course at Sun Willows Golf Course, against 15 schools.

The Pirate racers toured the course with teammates during a howling windstorm the day prior, which fortunately abated for the sunny and chilly race the next morning. The race started fast over the two-loop course, with a downhill finish, which made for exciting sprints across the line.

This was the second race for Yarkin (junior) at State, and the first for Guenther (freshman), and both are hopefuls to return in 2023. The team finished the season with a party to reminisce and hand out awards, and recognize outgoing Captain Hank McSheehy (senior), as he looks forward to graduating after the spring track season.
