Cross country team on the run, headed to Curtis Invitational

The Pirates ran against 29 other teams throughout the day in separate waves, on a course that wound twice around Sunset Elementary and Tyee Middle School in Eastgate.

Pirate harriers traveled to their second invitational meet, on Saturday, Sept. 24, to compete at the Bellevue Invitational on a hot, dusty course.

The Pirates ran against 29 other teams throughout the day in separate waves, on a course that wound twice around Sunset Elementary and Tyee Middle School in Eastgate.

The course included two trips down harrowing stairs around a sharp corner, leading to a few scrapes on runners seen around the team tent area after their races (all Pirates escaped unscathed).

Two performances by the Pirates were noteworthy: a breakthrough run by Christian Kincade, running 18:46 minutes on the 4.43 km course, and a race by Madeline Yarkin, who moved up from seventh in her heat to first place over the final two miles of the course, finishing in 19:32 minutes.

The Pirates competed at their home meet on Tuesday, Sept. 27, and are now preparing for the large Curtis Invitational at Chambers Bay on Saturday, Oct. 1 — with recaps to follow next week. For many, the Curtis Invitational will be their first look at the course where they will race in the District Championships, where it will be decided which runners proceed on to State.
