Girls’ Soccer still on a winning streak, moving into playoffs

Coach Scott Nicolino said he is excited to see what the team’s players accomplish in the playoffs.

The Vashon High School Girls Soccer team wrapped up the regular season with a string of victories on the road. The Pirates played Cascade Christian on Monday, Oct. 11, and came away with another big win. The final score was 7-0.

After a rare week off from games, Vashon traveled to Tacoma to play Annie Wright on Monday, Oct. 18. With another dominating performance, the Pirates maintained possession for the majority of the game. Although the final score was 4-1, Vashon had several scoring opportunities thwarted by repeated offsides calls.

In the end, two goals were scored by senior co-captain Phoebe Wilke, assisted by her fellow co-captain sophomore Linnea Heuschert. Junior forward Hanifa Khidr also scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Lila Cohen. Heuschert logged in another assist to sophomore Rose Peterson.

Just three days later, the team headed north to face East Jefferson, in Port Townsend. After narrowly defeating East Jefferson at home, Vashon hoped to secure a win to lock in the second place seed in the Nisqually League. Keeping an aggressive approach and relying on smart passing the Pirates won 3-0. Goals were scored by senior Lucy Wing, freshman Besa Hruska, and sophomore Mallory Keenan.

Vashon’s last home game against Seattle Christian was canceled due to roster issues with the Seattle school. The game was recorded as a 1-0 win for Vashon.

Senior Night will now be celebrated on Tuesday, Nov. 2, as Vashon moves into the district playoffs. The kick-off is scheduled for 5:45 p.m.

Scott Nicolino, the team’s coach, said he is very proud of the team and excited to see what players accomplish in the playoffs.

“Each and every player is capable of contributing and now it comes down to execution,” Nicolino said. “And honestly, that is what sets this team apart from so many others.”
