Vashon’s soccer girls stayed in the thick of the Nisqually League race with a win and an overtime loss last week.

The Pirates earned their first shutout, 5-0, over Cascade Christian on the Bonney Lake High School Field Tuesday, then suffered a loss 4-2 in overtime to Charles Wright on Thursday.

It took the Pirates 16 minutes to get on the board against Cascade Christian. As the ball pinballed around the goal box on a corner kick play, Cat Amick pushed the ball to Anna Jones, who tapped it to defender Brooke Pringle as she came in from the outside, and Pringle put it in the net.

Teal Sigler scored in the 38th minute on an assist from Amick.

Amick got two quick goals in the second half, in the 54th minute with Jones getting the assist, and in the 57th minute on a feed from Sigler.

Sigler finished the scoring in the 64th minute with Carlyle Scott getting the assist.

Coach Paul Beytebiere cleared the bench for the final minutes, and reserves Marielee Storms and Megan Hackett came very close to adding a sixth goal.

Cascade Christian did not have a JV team.

Thursday was not the Pirates’ day, beginning with a late ferry making the JV late for the start of their game, continuing through a downpour for much of the varsity game and concluding with a loss in overtime.

In the varsity game, Charles Wright got two sloppy goals, both on corner kicks, in the first half.

The Pirates came to life in the second half. Sigler converted a penalty kick in the 47th minute after Amick was dragged down from behind in the penalty box. Amick got a picture-perfect unassisted goal in the 63rd minute.

The Tarriers’ Natalie Weyerhauser scored in the final two seconds of the first five-minute overtime period and again midway through the second OT. The Pirates were unable to answer and had to settle for a 4-2 loss.

The JV Pirates defeated the Tarrier JV with two early first half goals. Taylor Hernandez scored in the eighth minute with an assist from Marya Munsey. Hackett took a long pass from goalkeeper Larissa Kuhns for the second goal in the 15th minute.

Kuhns, first half, and Taylor Knowles, second half, shared the shutout.

The Vashon JV returns to Charles Wright today, Wednesday, for a 4 p.m. game. The varsity travels to Seattle Christian tomorrow for a 3:30 p.m. game.
