Girls’ track team smashes competition, boys get wins, too

VHS girls took first place at meet held at Klahowya High School on May 4.

The Vashon girls took first place as a team at the track and field meet held at Klahowya High School on May 4.

They had 66.5 team points, and Klahoya finished second with 49 points. Bellevue Christian took third with 47.5 points and East Jefferson finished fourth with 44 points.

The VHS boys’ team placed fourth with 38 points. The highlights for the boys consisted of Levi Blasingim winning the mile in a time of 5:09. Blake Gibbons took first in the 110-meter-high hurdles with a personal best of 17.27, and George Murphy took first in both the pole vault contest, with a height of 11’6, and high jump with a mark of 5’6.

Hank McSheehy took third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:28. The highlights for the girls included Alana Bass taking first in the 100 meters in 13.28, and she also took first in the 200 meters in 27.59. Bass also captured first place in the long jump with a leap of 15’3 which is a personal best.

The Pirate girls swept the long jump with Indigo Assink and Caitlin Jeffcoat claiming the top spots with a height of 4’6. Nicki Becker finished in third, clearing the bar at 4’4. Amelia Medeiros smashed both her personal record and the competition in discus, with a throw of 101’3. Madeline Yarkin set a personal best in the pole vault at 7’, to finish third. Yarkin also took first in the mile at 5:46, and set her personal record in the 800 meters, claiming the victory at 2:43.

Emerson Dunn took third in the javelin, with a personal-best mark of 76’3.

Vashon High School will be the host of the Nisqually League Championships on Saturday, May 14. At this meet, all nine Nisqually League schools will compete for the top eight spots in each event to advance to the 1A West Central District championship meet at North Mason High School on May 20 and 21.

There will be an admission charge for spectators to get into the stadium for the league championships at VHS, and the concession stand will be open. Come on out and support our Pirates and enjoy a day of track and field.
