At 4:50 a.m. Saturday, March 21, about 35 novice and experienced members of Vashon Island Junior Crew (VIJC) and about 20 members of the Vashon Rowing Club left Vashon Island to join 1,100 other rowers and participate in the 2009 Green Lake Spring Regatta.

Pirates baseball team beats two other teams by huge margins

The Vashon Pirates baseball team secured two Nisqually League wins by large margins last week to push their league and season record to 2-1. On Thursday, they hosted the Charles Wright Academy Tarriers of Tacoma.

In two games, Pirates suffer loss, then take last-minute win

A loss then a last-minute victory left the Pirate varsity boys soccer team with a 2-1 record in Nisqually League play after last week’s games. The JV team had only one game, a 4-4 tie with Charles Wright.

Boys capture basketball state championship title

The Vashon High School boys Pirates basketball team achieved their goal of the season — bringing the big gold ball back to the Island, and with it the 1A state high school basketball championship title on Saturday.

Girls basketball team loses two tough games at state tournament

The Pirates played two tough games at this year’s state tournament, losing to Onalaska 46-36 on Wednesday, March 4, and being knocked out of the tournament by Chelan 49-33 on the following day.

Boys basketball team captures TriDistrict Tournament title

The Pirate boys’ basketball team cut down the nets at the Mountlake Terrace High School gym on Saturday after winning the 1-A TriDistrict Tournament title. They begin play today at the 1-A State Tournament in the Yakima SunDome, as the number one seed out of the Northwest region.

Shiosaki repeats state championship at 112 pounds

Sylvie Shiosaki didn’t remember her final match on Saturday, but she did know she had just won her second consecutive championship at Mat Classic XXI, the state wrestling tournament. Last year she won the 112-pound bracket.

The Vashon Pirates girls basketball team lost to the Seattle Christian Warriors Saturday night in the sub-district title game to decide the number one and number two team to tri-district.

Boys beat Redskins and play King’s on Friday

The Vashon High School boys Pirates basketball team took a giant step in their quest for a 1A state championship on Saturday, beating the highly ranked Port Townsend Redskins 59-38 winner-to-state subdistrict contest at the Orting High School gym.

Pirates primed for playoffs

The Vashon High School boys Pirates basketball team completed a perfect Nisqually League season last week by taking their last two games from Life Christian and Charles Wright Academy. This year’s title is the fifth in a row for the successful program under coach Andy Sears.

Girls basketball team tallies two final league wins

The Vashon Pirates ended the 2008-09 regular season with two league victories last week, bringing their record to 15-4, or 10-2 in the Nisqually League.

Five boys grapplers head to state

At the regional wrestling tournament held last Saturday at Bellevue Christian High School, five tough Vashon Pirates ascended the ladder into the Tacoma Dome where the state tournament will be held this weekend. Once inside the Dome, each wrestler will compete with 15 others in his weight class to determine the best in the state.
