U14 Eagles victorious in Labor Day tournament
Vashon High School’s Pirate football team defeated the Sultan Turks last Friday 24-21 in a tense duel that was not decided until the final seconds.
Vashon High School girls soccer coach Paul Beytebiere didn’t seem too perturbed by his team’s 6-1 loss last Saturday to Port Townsend’s Redskins.
The Vashon Pirates cross-country team is off and running in 2008, according to boys coach Kevin Ross. Ross said that 20 athletes turned out, which will supply a solid core of performers for both varsity and junior varsity.
Vashon High School football head coach Clay Eastly seemed very happy with the outcome of last Friday night’s game, the opener for the season against the Sultan Turks, a non-league opponent.
Vashon High School varsity tennis head coach Jake Dillon said last week after a Friday practice on a balmy afternoon at the Pirate courts that he will use a team of seven including lone senior Max Burnham, who is also a basketball player.
Coach Dave Plypick said the volleyball team is younger this year. He’s looking for an on-the-floor leader to replace Shannon McGowan, who graduated last year.

Heavy population density can and often does have a negative effect on the health of the deer population. When populations reach a certain level, the incidence of disease and parasitical infection increases, and dietary restrictions negatively affect size and health. As a result, growth potential is not fully realized. Many of us who are concerned about the wildlife on our islands have observed this to be true of our deer population. Proper herd management is the answer to the problem.
