Masters rowers take gold at world competition in Italy
Cool, gray morning skies welcomed the nearly 400 runners and walkers who gathered on Saturday morning for the 33rd annual Bill Burby Inspirational Fun Run and Walk. An estimated 130 participants wore stickers declaring “I’m Running for Ryan,” a fundraiser that brought in more than $1,800 for the Ryan Krug Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Last week two Vashon wrestlers competed in USA Wrestling’s Regional Championships in Poc-atello, Idaho, and one young islander won the highly competitive Triple Crown award.
Junior rowers came home victorious from Nationals last weekend, where one Vashon boat medaled, three finished in the top 10 in their regattas and all 16 Vashon rowers qualified for the finals in their events. From Vashon, eight boats competed, tying for second most in this year’s championships.
Three Vashon High School athletes competed in the 1A state track and field championships last weekend, and one returned with a medal from the prestigious tournament. Two young islanders who attend private schools in Seattle also put forward award-winning performances at State, which took place at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.
Vashon Island Rowing Club coach Richard Parr has kept the junior rowers’ focus this spring on the District Championships that took place last weekend weekend, and their hard work paid off when the club qualified a record number for Nationals.

During its last week of regular-season play, the Pirate baseball team took two wins, defeating both Chimacum and Life Christian
Vashon’s boys soccer season concluded last week, when the team won its final two matches, defeating Life Christian and Eatonville. The last three games of the season were all victories, which brought the Pirate record to dead even — eight wins and eight losses for the year
After a two-week hiatus in their schedule, the Pirate track and field team returned to action last Thursday outfitted in their new gold uniforms at a meet hosted by Charles Wright Academy.
The Pirates’ return to the soccer pitch at home on April 15, after a week of spring break, resulted in a welcome victory against Cedar Park Christian.
The Pirate baseball team returned to league play last week to take down Cedar Park Christian but then fell to a closely matched Seattle Christian team in its next game.
The Vashon High School baseball team faced Bellevue Christian twice last week and pulled off two big wins, beating the Vikings 9-0 and 9-3.
