The Vashon Lacrosse Club’s high school girls team, the Vashon Valkyries, took to the field last Wednesday against Roosevelt High School. It was the first time in 15 years that a girls’ high school lacrosse team has represented Vashon.
On Tuesday, March 13, Vashon Lacrosse Club’s boys high school team opened the season against Seattle’s Blanchet High School. This game was a close match from the opening face-off until the final whistle.

McMurray Middle School kicked off its wrestling season this month with about 23 young grapplers, up from last year’s 18.
Last week a half-dozen Islanders gathered in the wrestling room at Vashon High School to practice the ancient martial art of Aikido. One man, clad in a black belt and pants, had been practicing for decades. Another young boy had just picked up the art and didn’t even have a white Aikido uniform yet.
After earning a spot in the tri-district round of state playoffs, the Vashon girls basketball team exited playoffs one win short of the regional round following losses to Cascade Christian and Cedar Park Christian.
The Vashon High School wrestling team put the cap on another successful season last weekend when eight pirate grapplers represented the Island at the state championships at the Tacoma Dome. Every match was hard fought, with many Pirates having more trouble battling the clock than their opponents.
The Vashon Seals Swim Team recently wrapped up a strong fall season. Despite the team’s small size and limited practice facilities, the Seals have formed a solid backbone of older swimmers in recent years and have become a more formidable opponent at meets. Over four meets last season, the 45 swimmers competed in 382 swims. More than 50 percent of those swims resulted in personal best times for the athletes, and 73 percent of the swims resulted in a Silver, Gold or Champs time standard. In addition, new Seals team records were set 36 times throughout the season.
Tuesday, Feb. 7, marked the last regular season game and Senior Night as the Pirate girls basketball team brought down the Chimacum Cowboys. Two days later the team took another victory over University Prep in a nail-biting playoff game.
The Vashon boys basketball team ended regular season play on Tuesday, Feb. 7, with a 60-55 Senior Night win against Chimacum. Seniors Dan Lofland, Dylan Basurto, Jesse Hazzard, Torin Perret and Alex Vanderpool, along with their parents and families, were honored before the home game.
