Pirates boys’ tennis stays strong, now at 4-1 in league play

VHS prevails over East Jefferson, but falls to Klahowya.

Vashon High School (VHS) has a 4-1 record at the end of the third week of league play in tennis.

VHS over East Jefferson 5-0

East Jefferson is comprised of two high schools — Chimacum and Port Townsend — which form one tennis team.

Coach Keith Johnson brought five very scrappy players to compete with VHS. Due to the limited number of players, he was compelled to forfeit the #1 doubles match. The minimum to fill out the varsity meet structure is eight.

The number one singles contest was the match of the day.

Junior Finn Hawkins (VHS) played senior Reid Martin (EJ) to a third-set tiebreak thriller, which Hawkins captured in a see-saw battle, 16/14.

Hawkins took the first set in a very close seven games to five, then fell in the second, 4-6, with the decider being the aforementioned tiebreak.

The second singles match was played between senior Moses Trundle-Strachan (VHS) and Stuart Dow (EJ). The first set went to Trundle-Strachan in a very close tiebreaker (9/7) followed by a match-winning second set of 6-2.

Number one doubles was not played due to forfeiture.

Number two doubles was contested between sophomore Charlie Walker and freshman Colt Holloway (VHS) versus Peter Giddens and Connor Paterson (RJ).

The VHS pair made quick work of it, taking a 6-1, 6-1 win.

Number three doubles saw senior Jonas Wahanik and junior Jack Harvey (VHS) win an easy victory against Spencer Fordham and Conner Paterson 6-0, 6-0.

Klahowya wins over VHS 4-1

The Klahowya team came with 17 players in a motor coach fit for the Seahawks. It was huge!

Coach Dave Kraft has a squad that mirrors the Pirates’ skill and drive. There were deciding tiebreakers in three out of the five matches.

Hawkins played #1 singles again for VHS and lost the match in the second set tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-7(8).

Trundle-Strachan played Eli Kraft (KHS) at number two singles and suffered a 3-6, 2-6 loss.

The number one doubles match was in doubt most of the way, with Hatcher Freda (senior) and Danny Baldinger (senior) trailing Alex Isaacs and Rob Slater 2-6, and down in the second.

The VHS team rallied to take the second set in a tiebreaker 7-6(6). This forced a third set 10-point tiebreaker which VHS won 10/4.

Senior Nick Zuckerman and junior Jack Harvey, playing for VHS, dropped the first set 3-6 to Dylan Michael and Casey Bergman which forced a second set tiebreaker, during which Zuker and Harvey eventually fell 6-7(4).

Number three doubles was contested between Colt Holloway and Quill Tegenfeldt-Pfohman and (KHS) players Zach Schweitzer and Ryan Goodman. VHS was easily bested in the first set 0-6. This lit a fire under them, and they took a protracted second set 7(2)-6 — leading to the third set 10-point tiebreaker, which they dropped 7/10.

The team’s head coach is Rick Doussett, backed by assistant coach Todd Zimberg. Go Pirates!
